Distribution of Branchinecta mackini in British Columbia in British Columbia

Introduction

Branchinecta mackini is found in western North America, west of the continental divide (Belk, 2000). In British Columbia, the presence of this species on the interior plateau has been documented by Hammer & Forró (1992), Reynolds (1979), and Scudder (1969).

Prior to the publication of Belk’s 2000 paper, this species was thought to occur both east and west of the continental divide. In this paper, Belk described the taxon east of the divide as a new species B. readingi.

This species inhabits temporary or permanent pools of moderate to high salinity (Eriksen & Belk, 1999).
